It is important for an aspirant or anyone who would like to embark on a quality engineering job to know the quality control or qc inspector duties and responsibilities. So, in this article, I am going to show you what are those quality control inspector duties and responsibilities.
During my stay in our country Philippines in the year 2006, I had the plan to work abroad but I really don’t have an idea what best career will I specialized, then I have a friend who’d just come back from Saudi Arabia taught me what job to take, you know to work abroad you have to specialize one field only. And I don’t have an idea about the Quality Control inspector duties and responsibilities prior to reaching UAE.
So what happened I decided to take the Quality Engineering career and to become a QA/QC Engineer which is my current job now and last to become a Quality Manager someday.
But I need to have a total of 15 to 20 years to become a Quality Manager, so exciting because when you are a Manager the salary is quite.. I may say Wow! (Laughing)
I would like to tell you that when you are on your first step in the Quality Engineering field, your position would probably be a Quality Control Inspector.
I want to make it clear, I mentioned in this article that I did not mention that I was a Quality Control or QC Inspector at that time when I had my first job or first contract in one of the well-known companies in the UAE.
I would like to show briefly the ladder of this career to make it crystal clear. I started as Civil Inspector in the Philippines and Quality Control Inspector on my first job in the UAE, then QA/QC Engineer now in the second company I connected with which I got a total of ten years of works to experience from that time frame. The next step would be Senior QA/QC Engineer and after that QA/QC Manager someday.
In my previous article, I have mentioned that I had my first contract in one of the biggest construction company in the United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) that was way back 2007, so I was a novice then when it comes to any documentation jobs, but physical jobs like site surveillance, inspection and checking ongoing works on site, it was normal because that was my work as Civil Inspector in the Municipality of Puerto Princesa, Philippines way back 2003.
For newly graduate and newly born Civil Engineers here are the “Duties and Responsibilities” as Quality Control or QC Inspector that you might want to consider.
Quality Control or QC Inspector Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitoring and administering the QA/QC Plan or Programme and ensuring incorporated materials on construction projects are in compliance with the plans and specifications.
- Assuring that the work is performed as required by the contract and meets or exceeds the required qualities.
- Assuring the acceptable quality of materials, processes, and workmanship in the project work.
- Assisting Quality Assurance and Quality Control Engineer such as steel reinforcement checking the same as in construction drawing.
- Issue materials receiving reports for the delivered materials.
- Waterproofing checking the underground level and in wet areas in the building.
- Following up the concreting works in the presence of the Engineer or Consultant, slump test, and cubes preparation for the compressive test.
- Finishing work checking in the presence of the Engineer or Consultant, block, plaster, painting, tiling, kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, ceiling, and light fittings.
- Maintain standards of safety and comply with Company’s Health, Safety, and Environment Management System requirements.
- Follow and maintain Company standards of Quality in accordance with Company Quality System requirements.

Sir, Good day again. As of date, I am given a chance to work here with one of the Private Construction Firms in the Philippines. Just few days passed, one of the high officials of the company recommended me to handle the QA/QC Department since they still don’t have anybody to take the responsibility. The Operations Manager challenged me for the position. So, I accepted even though I know that it would not be an easy task, there are so many facts to be considered. My experience in ARAMCO PROJECTS Saudi Arabia as an Approved QC Inspector / Supervisor will be my Instrument and weapon in this work. I also know that organizing QA/QC department takes time and too much effort particularly in the preparation of documents from Quality Control Manual, Plan, Policy, Procedures and such related documents and requirements. One thing more is that during the implementation stage, manning and training of qualified personnel. From this point of view, can I ask for some quidelines or checklist in organizing said department and the preparation of all the required documents. I started searching for samples and templates of each and every forms and needed documents. Sorry to tell you I do not have that checklist or guidelines. I can suggest instead, first prepare your department organizational chart then create your goal by using one of the Quality Control Tools which is the Fish Bone Diagram. Like for example if your head is “upgrading your staff” then identify what is your first bone, your first bone might be a Training center then second bone is ISO 9001 and so on and so forth. Then at the end of the day, you will establish what you are searching for.

Before applying paint in plastered area you have to conduct a pull-out test and moisture content test, Micron test for the paint thickness.

You might want to say Pull-off test for plaster. Pull-off test shall only be done if there is issue on plaster or whenever mentioned in the specification. If the workmanship of the plaster is satisfactory and the completed work has no surface issues then Pull-off test is not necessary.
Dry Film Thickness or DFT is the type of test to determine the thickness of the paint in “micron” unit.

It is way far from the field of construction where the exact work of a Quality Engineer. My advise is take some courses related to construction and take experience from the local employer and then you can apply abroad. I am just explaining as to my perspective because that was my experience. But we have the so called “Freedom” you are always free to try.

Yes, that part Civil Engineers from the Phillippines are proud of because they are trained in 5 years of learning plus 6 months of review before taking the Board Examination for Civil Engineer. Apart from that, there’s a lot of subjects that one can be very equipped after graduating civil engineering degree. The subjects are Engineering Economy, Ports & Harbor, Earthquake Engineering, Materials & Testing, Soil Mechanics, Timber Design, Steel Design and Reinforced Concrete Design etc. these are the reason’s they are capable of doing related to construction. The QC Engr. will undertake the establishing of relevant documents on a project. Ensure that is established and approved by the Consultant. Attend related meetings and coordinate to all internal departments and stakeholders. Ensures TPL is approved and many more. And will conduct random inspections on site as well. Closure of any issues.

Hi Michael, actually I don’t know if there are companies hiring here in UAE because I’m not searching for a new job now. Well, there might be, just check it out. It is up to you where category or what type of job you want to work. But, if I were you just go to where you have been, you know what I mean. Just go to a job where you are expert at.
For me, I’ve started at small offer but bigger than that. It is you who can really decide whether you will take it or not.

Perhaps, you are trying to mean “What are the training that a QAQC Engineer could take?” Because, if you would say requirement it is “Oblige” a QAQC Engineer to take. Well, it is still in the Engineer willingness to take trainings in order for him to upgrade.
A QAQC Engineer could take QMS, CQE OSHA etc.

Hello Noel… Would you tell me about mix design of concrete and the ratio?
Mix Design of concrete shall be calculated based to the standard that the designer would like to use and the proportions of aggregates including water and cement. So before you will come out to the Mix Design you have to have a series of test, sampling of aggregate, trial mix, test of cube sample. But there are already concrete mix design that has been proven to be safe, practical and economical which the concrete supplier today are already using.

If the slump is more than the maximum required tolerance just turn the drum of truck mixer in maybe 10 or 15 minutes and or until the slump falls within the limit.

If you’re still young, you can take BS Civil Engineering course. Some minor subjects maybe credited and not much time as that you start from first year because you know you were IT Engineer already.

There are QA/QC Engineer for Mechanical works. And there are QA/QC Engineer for Civil Works. Like I’ve said take training course in line with your career.

I did not take quality engineering I just studied BS Civil Engineering and when I started to work after passing the board I’ve chosen quality engineering as my specialization or career because you know Civil Engineering has many branches or field of specialization, so anyone can choose.
